What Do Women Really Want When They Buy a House?

What do women really want when they buy a house? A recent survey of 1000 women done by a national bank asked:"Describe the best things about home ownership". The poll was to probe their motivations and needs:

44% said they bought their home to feel "financially secure".

40% wished they had more knowledge about the fees associated with buying a home.34% bought a home to be able to "decorate or renovate the way they want."

32% wanted more information about the annual costs of ownership.

30% wanted more information on mortgage options.

I found the above quite interesting and in turn have added more information reports that I can provide to address any concerns or properly explain the real estate process of buying or selling real estate.

Those are interesting answers. Maybe it is the Canadian atmosphere.

Endre:

It was the Toronto-Dominion Bank with over a thousand branches across Canada.

I work with groups who support low-income women and the number one comment I hear when they are asked why they want to buy a home is "I want to be able to paint my own walls".  Since most homes have some version of off-white wall colors, it seems an odd motivator.  But they are truly passionate about the idea.  I wonder if landlords could keep their tenants happier by letting them pick their own wall colors?

It makes sense and I have a very successful landlord/ buyer who has very few vacancies and has happy tenants!

Ty that is a report that tells us a bit about how our society has changed. Had that survey been done in prior decades I bet kitchens, dishwashers, bathroom, vanities, etc. would have been at the top of the list.

Bob, I think they still are but those are material things and both men and women are looking for something more than just 'things' in a home.

Ty,

My experience is that women buy the kitchen and walk-in closets; guys buy the work shop.

Very interesting, Ty. As a woman I may have learned something about myself. LOL

Has there been a recent survey about what men want? I know when looking for our condo, my husband, who is the chef in the family, wanted the workable, updated kitchen and liked the more upgraded models.

Terry: Or the other way round as per Pam's comment.

Pam: What people are looking for in a home and by whom is a great question to ask in any market rather than assume a gender bias. I am going to do a blog right now and ask, what do men  want in a home?

Thanks

Wow. Ty, I never considered the obvious of women wanting to feel financially secure. Thanks.

John:

As women are taking control over their finaces (some have for years) it makes sense that one of their largest expenditures with or with out a parter is a home.
